Dear "Em",
Hi! Here are your instructions about how you're going to get to Jing An to meet me on Saturday morning ...
(1) After you arrive at the airport and go through customs and then get your bags, the first thing you need to do is to get some Chinese RMB. I would suggest that you get 500 - 1,000 RMB from your ATM. You should be able to find the ATM's at the airport without too much problem.
** But be CAREFUL! Watch for Chinese-men without luggage who are watching you too closely ... they can be pickpockets or will try to steer you to an unlicensed taxi.
(2) After you get your money from the ATM you should look for signs that say "MAGLEV" train.
* This is the world's fastest railway train ... and it goes from the airport to "Longyang" station, so as well as being the fastest way its also fun! :)
* Buy a round-trip card, since you'll also take the maglev back to the airport.
* At the same time, ask the cashier for some small money ... you want 10 RMB in coins.
(3) When you get to Longyang Lu station ... you will see signs for "Line 2" Metro.
* When you get to the Metro entrance look for the ticket machines that say "Coins Only" ... there are usually less people in front of them and they don't break-down all the time as the machines with paper money do.
* Find the button at the top right part of the screen that says ENGLISH and push
* English-train map ... find ... Line 2 at the bottom of the page and press
* It will show you the map for Line 2 ... press "Jing An"
* The machine will then take you to another screen that shows you how much to pay ... insert your coins ... a magnetic ticket will appear
* Go through the turnstile with you ticket ... and catch the train that goes towards Jing An
WHEN YOU ARE IN THE METRO STATION AND GETTING YOUR TICKET ... WATCH OUT FOR PICKPOCKETS / PEOPLE WHO MIGHT TRY TO GRAB YOUR BAGS, ETC.
It's a busy station and there are bad guys just watching for tourists (just like you) who are distracted and searching for the machines, how to use them, how to get to the train, etc. SO BE CAREFUL
ALSO BE CAREFUL IN THE TRAIN, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE STANDING ... PICKPOCKETS ARE FAMOUS ..
(4) When you get to Jing An station ... go through the exit and look for the signs that say Jing An Park.
* Go upstairs to the street level ... and at the entrance to the park you will see the coffee shop "Doughnut King" and I will be there waiting for you.
* If you come out a wrong exit ... just look for Jing An Temple ... or ask someone for "Nanjing Xi Lu ... Jing An Tsu" ... and the entrance to the park is across the street from it.
* My phone is ********** ... if you have any difficulties ... try to find a way to telephone me
Your plane is supposed to arrive around 7:00am ... and since there are not too many people at the airport arriving at that time I would think you can get through customs / baggage, etc. within 30 minutes so you'll probably catch a maglev by 8:00am which means you should be at Jing An around 8:45 / 9:00am.
I'll go the Doughnut King from 8:30am and wait for you ... and you first Shanghai coffee and doughnut will be waiting for you :)
If you got questions about any of the above, let me know ...
yours,
Kerry
